Butty spent the rest of the afternoon attempting to gather provisions. It was Sunday and every shop on the island was closed. Gould led him to the restaurant at the Seaview Hotel, where with the manager’s permission, he raided their stores. As the Grand Banks didn’t have a refrigerator, he was limited to canned goods and fresh produce. He estimated the journey would take a little over three days, running at the nine knots cruising speed quoted on the paperwork he’d found in a drawer near the helm. He was provisioning for a week, to cover them for unforeseen delays.

Gould promised he’d supply plenty of extra diesel in cans as well as filling the tank before they left. Butty reminded the CIA agent that the closest land option they’d have for ninety percent of the journey would be Cuba, and urged him not to skimp on the fuel as he doubted he’d be allowed to leave if he was forced to set foot on Cuban soil in an American-owned vessel. Butty asked repeatedly to meet the man who was supposed to accompany him, but Gould had yet to introduce him. The trip would be far more comfortable with three to rotate watches, but Butty was praying the one he was getting was at least a seaman of some description, so he didn’t push for a third. The longer Gould delayed in producing the man, the less confident the captain was in his help being of much help.

After a filling meal in the Seaview restaurant on Gould’s tab, Butty retired to his room to catch a few hours’ sleep before leaving. He knew it might be his last chance for restful shuteye in the next few days. For the third time within twenty hours, he was startled awake by Agent Gould. Rising from his bed, Butty gathered his belongings, which were limited to his two photographs, the clothes he’d been bought from the hotel shop, and his wallet which still hadn’t dried out yet. Once again, he followed Gould to the Wagoneer, and they drove the dark streets of George Town to the marina.

A man wearing a sport coat and neatly pressed trousers met them at the Grand Banks and Butty tried not to laugh. All the guy needed were the dark shades and he’d be the stereotypical spook.

“You’re kidding me?” Butty muttered, turning to Gould.

“He’s not officially here on the island; we need him stateside, and you need crew, so this works out perfectly.”

“You’re kidding me?” Butty repeated.

“Fieldman, this is Raymond Butty Butterworth,” Gould said, ignoring the Englishman’s complaints. “Butty, meet Agent Fieldman.”

The man extended a hand, which Butty reluctantly shook.

“Check the port side bilge is pumping for me, would you Mr Fieldman?” Butty said, and in the dim light he could see the man was completely baffled. He turned to Gould again. “Everyone from San Diego knows boats, huh?”

“I’m actually from El Cajon, sir,” Fieldman volunteered. “It’s in the hills inland of San Diego.”

“Not much boating in those hills, I’m guessing,” Butty responded.
